The 1Ummah Scholarship Program for Less Privileged (SILP) specifically targets orphaned & vulnerable children especially those affected by the Boko Haram Crisis in the North-East with financial, material & psycho-social support. We hope to gradually meet the target of 1,000 pupils over the next five (5) years, In Shaa Allah.

Four Schools involved in the First phase 

  1. Darus-Salam Islamic School
  2. Mairi Islamic School
  3. Darul-Arqam Islamic School
  4. Al-Hidayah Islamic School

Components of scholarship

  1. School fees
  2. School Items- School-bags, text books, exercise books, Mathematical Sets Pencil
  3. Others- Food items, sanitary items, mosquito nets

Performance of SILP 1

  • First year recorded a great milestone-indigent pupils having firm assurance of fees and other support, improved steady attendance and concentration
  • A fact finding mission to Maiduguri discovered exceptional performance amongst some pupils. These have been selected to feature in the student awards ceremony instituted in the annual 1Ummah peace & Unity Convention 2016 edition
  • Health and physical appearance of our pupils have proven quite commendable

Challenges of SILP 1

  • Poor financial condition of most of the parents means schools are unable to charge appropriately to meet up with the expected standard of school.
  • Some guardians do not pay adequate attention to the attendance of the students.
  • Relocation and change of guardians of some of the orphans results in inconsistency in the performance of the students.

  1. Preliminary Preparations/Adjustments for SILP Phase II

In a bid to achieving better efficiency, the Da’wah and Charity Directorate introduced certain adjustments before the team embarked on the journey to Maiduguri, Borno State for the second phase of the SILP scholarship projects: these include:

a) Formation Of Team Borno and Identifying Reliable Local Partners

Team Borno was formed to conduct preliminary due diligence and preparations.

b) Deliverables

Articulation and Dissemination of following Criteria for recruitment of new students:

  • Orphans from death of both parents shall be given highest priority (Orphan 1)
  • Orphans from death of one parent (Orphan 2)
  • Orphans with guardian with established abject poverty (orphan 3)
  • IDPs in the camps (IDP 1)
  • IDPs within host community (IDP 2)
  • Families in abject poverty (Indigent)
  • Recommendations from our partners
  • Recommendations from recognized NGOs/Schools

SILP Phase II

  1. Additional 120 pupils enrolled in Maiduguri
  2. 100 new pupils enrolled in Adamawa
  3. 59 new pupils enrolled in  FCT
  4. Enrolment process streamlined in all locations
  5. Strengthened M&E mechanism

Way Forward

  • Finalize commitment to partner schools
  • Strengthen monitoring mechanism through creation of guardians association
  • Create 1ummah union of all students under SILP project for adequate support
  • Create Central database of all students and update continuously
  • Support to some of these school with classrooms and special training for their teachers
  • Special intervention on personal development of the children and incorporation of entrepreneurship training for secondary school pupils
